It should be noted that the National Museum of Military History has been entirely
designed and put up by a small group of dedicated volunteers, collectors and
military history buffs and enthusiasts, none of whom has a degree in museum
sciences or military history.
Since its early beginnings in 1982, the small team of volunteers, supported
by the city of Diekirch and the Luxembourg army, has kept adding and enhancing
the museum and its exhibits. Since the museum's origins, a total of way over
60.000 volunteer working hours ranging from sandblasting and painting to photographic
research and inventory keeping has been accounted for.
With almost as little as no support from other official local sources, ongoing
dedicated hard volunteer work pays off to ensure that the museum still keeps
growing. NATO armies and foreign governments, recognizing the value of the museum,
have donated selected artifacts and WWII vehicles to complete the museum's collections
or have provided other logistical support.
The Luxembourg government recognized the efforts of the volunteers in 1993
and authorized the museum to bear the title of «National Museum of Military
History».
A small equipped workshop is the museum’s key asset, but the real backbone
of the NMMH for many years has been and still is the museum's

Some of the museum volunteer staff also provide guided tours of the museum’s
exhibits (available in several languages) which can be arranged by written
request. Here again, all guides are volunteers, dedicating their free-time
to explain and show the museum in a lively way to interested audiences. The
volunteer tour guides are very knowledgeable about the historical aspects of
the battle around Diekirch and the displayed collections and artifacts. They are in particular:
